- July 2003 Georgia was in the emergency room with a fever of 105.3..they brought the fever down quickly with
motrin and tylenol. And they used a catheter to take urine. They suspected a Urinary Tract Infection. They were correct. We
stayed overnight in the ER after they gave her a shot in her bottom of antibiotics to start fighting the infection.
- Our pediatrican, Dr. Crosby urged us to take her to UCSF to be seen by a renal specialist in order to rule
out any abnormalities that may have contributed to her UTI.
- After much procrastination on my part, Georgia had a renal ultrasound and then a cystogram (an xray that
detects kidney reflux). The ultrasound showed a normal healthy renal system with the exception of 2 tiny simple cysts. These
were not something that needed to be treated. She was "probably born with them".
- The cytogram done in December 2004 showed us that Georgia has kidney reflux. Grade 1 on the right side and
grade 3 on the left. The most severe is grade 5. The kidney reflux was causing infection in her kidneys. Now that it has been
caught early, we save Georgia's renal system any damage.
- The treatment for KR is a daily course of antibiotics. Indefinetly. Until such time as she may grow out of
KR. The second choice and possibility is endoscopic surgery. We wait a year and repeat the cystogram...if at that time Georgia's
KR has shown improvement...we put off surgery. If her kidney reflux has not improved - Georgia has surgery.
